Canada- Kananaskis, AB Prisoner of War Camp 130 5¢, 50¢, $1, $5 June 1946
These pieces are all Type 1 varieties dated "Jan.-June 1946" on blue cardboard. This POW camp was in operation from January 1939 to January 1946. Locals referred to it as Camp "Kan-A-Nazi." It was located in the Bow Valley at the entrance to the Canadian Rocky Mountains. In 1939, the Seebee-Kananaskis Internment Camp #130 was opened at the north side of Mount Barrier. It was originally a camp for civilian internees and enemy merchant seamen. Two years later the majority of these detainees were sent to facilities in eastern Canada and the site was enlarged and fortified as a POW camp. The camp later held 650 prisoners of war that were mostly officers captured form the German Afrika Corps by the British Eighth Army in North Africa from late 1942 until 1946 when the camp closed. A few structures still remain today though poplar trees are overtaking much of the remaining open space. These pieces of Canadian POW history have truly survived well. Here are the grades: 1¢ PCGS Gem New 65PPQ, 50¢ PCGS Apparent Choice New 63 (small stain), $1 PCGS Choice New 63PPQ, $5 PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.
