Brantford, CW- The Bank of Brantford $5 Nov. 1, 1859 Ch. # 40-10-04-08a
This is only the second note we have been able to offer on this short-lived Canadian bank from its home location. This $5 is of the scarcer variety with the purple Hotel Belmont overprint on the back and a vignette of Fred(erick) Westbrook (born August 2, 1864) in period bicyclist garb. As stated on the note, not only was Westbrook the ten mile bicycle champion of Canada, but he was also the two and five mile champion. This overprint turns this note into an advertising note. Westbrook's father, H.T., was a successful hotelier in Brantford. In 1882, Brantford resident Frederick Westbrook won eleven gold medals, one revolver, two silver cups, and one clock. Among his results were ten firsts and one second place finish. The clock was won for a fancy bicycle riding contest and the two cups were for fast riding. It is not recorded what event he won the revolver in. This interesting back makes this note even more desirable for both the generalist and the specialist. Fine-Very Fine.
