Rare James Baird Scrip- One of Five Pieces Known

(St. John's), Newfoundland- James Baird Ltd. 50¢ Oct. 21, 1916
A beautiful, well signed example with wide margins and attractive color that earned the Choice Uncirculated 64 grade from PMG. The issue date was rubber stamped vertically near the left margin. This scrip is quite rare. Of the five known pieces, four are listed in major collections, including one housed in the National Currency Collection. Based on the information we have, this is the only example that has been offered publicly and it is two numbers away from the plate note in Charlton. Beginning as a simple import and drapery business in 1853, Scottish-born James Baird eventually expanded his business into "one of the largest mercantile and fish exporting operations in the colony" through a series of partnerships according to Charlton's Canadian Merchant Scrip book. He was also key in securing fishing rights for residents on the west coast of Newfoundland.
