This lot comes from the Tom O'Mara Collection that we sold in May 2005 where it was partially described as - "Tom O'Mara worked on this block throughout his Fractional collecting years and came rather close to accomplishing the virtually impossible. He was three notes away from completing the eight-note group that would be required to spell out FIRST - WASHINGTON D.C. - SECOND - BALTIMORE, MD. 50¢ Second Issue Experimental Set of Four Milton 2E50FR.2, 2b, 2c, 2d Gem New. Each of these four incredible notes bears the face printing of the finished 50¢ Second Issue plate. Also on the face of each note is the large bronze "50" normally found on the back. Immediately below the "50" and also in bronze is the unexplained date "March 21, 1863." This date appears on three of the four notes. On the note with the green back, the bronze overprint is misaligned so that the "50" is printed near the bottom of the note, and the date has apparently printed below the frame line and been inadvertently omitted. All four notes have the identical engraving on the back, which is that of the normal Second Issue notes with this exception: the area within the shield where the denomination appears is blank but for the outlined stars, and those stars are double outlined on these notes. They are single outlined on the regularly issued Second Issue notes. Each of the four backs is printed in a different color. 2E50FR.2 is printed in the green used on the Ten Cent note, .2b is printed in the red used on the 50¢ note, .2c is printed in the purple used on the 25¢ note and .2d is printed in the light brown used on the Five Cent note. The .2 and the .2c both have the handwritten word "Imperfect" written inside the blank shield. All four of these spectacular rarities grade Very Choice to Gem New, and all four are fully bright. Each of the notes is an extreme rarity, ranging from unique to three known. Milt Friedberg obtained this set on February 23, 1981 for $12,000. Tom O'Mara purchased it from CAA's 1997 sale of the Friedberg Collection. Since our sale of the O'Mara Collection, the new owner has had these notes graded by PCGS. They have agreed with three of our four grades. Their grades are as follows: 65PPQ, 64PPQ, 64PPQ and 58PPQ for the .2, .2b, .2d and the 2c respectively. (Total: 4 notes)

Milton 2E50R.1d 50¢ Second Issue Negative Essay Gem New. A superb example of the Negative Essay back. But for a few minor pre-print wrinkles in the soft white paper, this piece is flawless. It is an incredibly sharp printing in deep red on perfect white paper. The soft quality of that paper has allowed the embossing effect to show boldly through on the unprinted side. It's an uncommonly wonderful combination of beauty, extreme rarity and ideal preservation. ex-Superior's Fraser sale lot 98 2/1982; FCI to MRF 8/1984; MRF CAA 1/97 lot 1072 to Tom O'Mara. The so-called "Negative Essay," "Reverse Matrix," or "Negative Matrix" reverse is in reality none of these three things. Early catalogs erroneously called these "Matrix Reverses," mistakenly believing that they were printed from matrix dyes (transfer rolls) rather than plates. Some also felt, as the Chapmans did, that the notes were printed from plates that had been made from other plates rather than from matrix dyes or transfer rolls. The term "Negative Reverses," or "Negative Essays," came from the appearance of the notes, which looks at a glance like a photo negative, that is, the dark areas appear light and the light areas appear dark. However, this is not consistent throughout the entire design, as the denomination, parts of the shield and the lettered ribbons are not reversed. This back design was simply an unadopted proposal where someone decided that certain design elements would look better reversed. Debate still continues today as to whether these Negative Essays or the adopted positive designs are the more handsome. The term "Negative Essay," while it would not be technically correct in the realm of professional photography, has been universally accepted by Fractional collectors, dealers and researchers.

Milton 2E50R.4e 50¢ Second Issue Experimental Very Choice New. This and the Friedberg Note are the only two examples we know of. This piece is slightly the superior of the two. The other example realized $880 as lot 1085 of our January 1997 Sale. The note has terrific eye appeal and a charismatic attraction due to its "Which side is up?" enigma. The note has the full bronzing both face and back of the regular issue Fr. 1321, but the back engraving is printed on the same side of the note as the bronze oval, and the large bronze "50" and "R-2-18-63" surcharge appear on the other side. A few examples are known punched and stamped, but free of those cancellations, this fiber-paper experimental is an extreme rarity. This cataloger sold the note to Doug Hales in the early eighties. Then Tom O'Mara acquired it with the purchase of the Hales Collection in 1999. We sold it last May with the O'Mara Collection.

Milton 2E50F.2d 50¢ Second Issue Essay (Experimental) Choice New. This piece is about four-fifths of a note (very common from this era, particularly for these extra-bronzed pieces). The note is punched and stamped, and it has the bronze "D.C." These pieces with the additional bronze overprint came when paper that was intended for use on Experimental National Bank Notes was used for Fractional after the unrelated bronzing was applied. The "D.C." on this note was part of "WASHINGTON D.C." A far more detailed explanation appears in both our January 1997 and May 2005 catalogs.

Milton 2E50R.1 50¢ Second Issue Negative Essay New. Printed on an odd, thin fibrous paper quite unlike the normal fiber papers, stiff or soft papers on which most of these unusual experimentals come. This was originally item #19 from Frossard's 1893 listing, and that number is written in brown pen at the top right of the blank back. This note is plated on page 74 of the Fractional Encyclopedia. It is a Choice New example but for some very minor handling and a small nick at the bottom edge, far away from the design. Milt refers to this paper as "yellowed" in his encyclopedia description, but we are not at all convinced. The paper has a rather craft-like quality, and although the point is moot, we believe this to be its original color.
