Fr. 1310 Milton 1R50.3a 50¢ First Issue Superb Gem New. From our January 1995 sale of the Martin Gengerke Collection, where it was described as, "Fully and deeply perforated, with evenly balanced, large margins, the bottom margin has a strip of paper outside the perforations. The overall quality is equal to any we've seen." At that time, the note had been estimated at $600-up, and it realized $742.50. It should now easily sail well past the four-figure mark. Included with the note is the original signed and sealed photo certificate from the Gengerke sale. While these seemed to be a good idea at the time, re-visited a decade later they certainly look corny. But the note is great.

Fr. 1314 (altered) Milton 2R50.1 50¢ Second Issue Choice New. In his Encyclopedia, Milt states, "The authenticity of this number is questionable, as no genuine example has been seen." That still stands. This piece has been altered from a Friedberg 1317 by the removal of its surcharges. Tom O'Mara was aware of this when he acquired it, and collected it as an altered piece to represent the number. It is extremely unlikely than any Fr. 1314's were produced, and in this cataloger's opinion, it's well past time to de-list these before more problems ensue. Were the alteration less obvious, we would be reluctant to sell this, but this piece is apparent enough that its presence in the market will not cause problems.

Fr. 1226 Milton 3R3.1c 3¢ Third Issue About New. This nice Vertical Pair is one of the few known multiples of the "No Pearls" variety, missing the two little circular decorations beneath the diamond at the bottom center of the Washington portrait. This variation, although minor, has always been of interest to collectors, and it was mentioned in Fractional literature as early as the 1890's. Research has indicated that this variety is missing from only two face plates: numbers 32 and 35.

Pre-Issue First Issue Set. The four notes are all perforated, no-monogram pieces: Fr. 1229 Gem New, Fr. 1241 Gem New, Fr. 1280 Gem New and Fr. 1311 Choice About New due to a corner fold. All four notes have the inked date at the lower left corner, "Aug 26. 1862," and all four came to Tom enclosed in an envelope reading, "First Issue Postage Currency under Act of July 17th. 1862. I obtained them from New York Sub. Treasury before any were in circulation on 25th August 1862." Also in the lot are two other envelopes in the same hand, both well worth quoting, "Second issue fractional 1863. It was said that when the proofs of this issue were shown to President Lincoln he remarked that there could be no objection to such money, to take the place of coin -- when asked in what particular he referred to he replied, 'They have a metallic ring.'" The third envelope is of a larger size designed to hold third issue notes. It is titled "Third Issue of Fractional Currency -- government becoming extravagant and using more paper." This group was acquired by Tom O'Mara when he purchased the Doug Hales Collection. (Total: 7 items)

First Day of Issue Set. Tom O'Mara acquired this irreplaceable set as lot 183 of our January 1994 sale of the Wayne Liechty Collection, where it was described, "The eight pieces in this lot represent to us what collecting is all about. This is the ultimate interest item to a Fractional Currency Collector. First, clipped from a N.Y. newspaper (most likely The Times) is Assistant Treasurer John J. Cisco's September 8, 1862 announcement that Postage Currency will be distributed at his office beginning that day. There are two other clippings, one from the Journal of Commerce and one from the New York Times, both dated September 10, 1862. Both are reports on the chaos and humor of a small-change-hungry city, desperate for the new currency. The crowning item is a handwritten envelope containing a 'full sett (sic) of Postage Currency,' and inscribed, 'These specimens received from the assistant treasurer's office, (Wall Street, New York) on the first day of Public Issue, Monday September 8th 1862 obtained by -- Theodore W. Van Norden.' In the envelope are four fully perforated examples of Postage Currency; Fr. 1228 Superb Gem New, Fr. 1242 10¢ Superb Gem New, Fr. 1279 25¢ Gem New, a bit tight at the bottom and Fr. 1310 50¢ Gem New, a bit close at the top and left. All four have deep, even perforations and perfect original color." To this cataloger, this set is one of the most evocative Fractional items and would be a major highlight in any collection it entered. (Total: 8 items)

Fr. 1228 Milton 1R5.3a 5¢ First Issue Gem New. This beautiful Perforated Five Cent note is listed as Milton 1R5.3a. It's printed on the orange-yellow paper in dark, red-brown ink. Although the left edge of the face is somewhat tight, the perforations are so deep and perfect all around that calling this 100% original note anything less than Gem would be a real disservice. It's a superlative piece that should please even the fussiest of collectors.

Fr. 1228 Milton 1R5.3 5¢ First Issue Very Choice New. A super original note, with excellent perforations all the way around and extremely fresh paper quality. The colors are beautifully bold, and the note is a perfect Gem save for slight tightness at the left of the face and at the right of the back. This is the variety on the lighter, lemon-yellow paper, listed as 1R5.3 by Milton.
