Georgia September 10, 1777 $2 Very Fine-Extremely Fine. A few splits on the back have been repaired with old paper tape, and the upper left corner tip has been skillfully redrawn, but the note is unrestored in all of its major areas. The orange Sailing Ship vignette is bold and clear, as are all five signatures and every bit of the text. Exceptional condition, in spite of its problems.

Massachusetts December 10, 1781 $16 Choice Extremely Fine. We are pleased to offer here three examples of a previously unknown note. The entire issue is unpriced in Newman and noted as "Extremely Rare" in Friedberg. Until this small group appeared, no examples were known of this $16 denomination, and the other denominations ($4, $6 and $8) were represented by one to three of each. These three notes turned up with a large group of canceled Massachusetts Guaranteed notes and a small group of high-grade Massachusetts fiscal paper, much of which is also in this sale. We know of two other pieces, also $16, that turned up with this group. All three of the pieces that we offer are essentially identical, varying only in centering. Had but a single piece turned up, it could well have realized $15,000 or more. With this small group all appearing at once, an accurate estimate is impossible. We're confident that these pieces will surely realize . . .

$5 Educational Silver Certificate Progress Proof. This Proof is shown in Hessler's work as SE-14. Although Hessler shows only the design area without the pencil notations, he does quote the pencil notation, "Last Proof before hardening," which appears in the wide margin area at the lower right. This Proof is on India paper mounted to card. The mounting was done prior to printing, as can clearly be seen by the embossing effect through to the back of the card. The note is definitively tied to the plate in the Hessler book by a minor age spot on the right arm of the trumpet-bearing figure, which shows in the Hessler plate. That miniscule spot is the only anomaly separating this gorgeous proof from absolute perfection. The note bears several very minor differences from the issued note; the most apparent is the date of 1895 in the ribbon at right rather than the 1896 of the issued note. Last-minute problems delayed the date of issue and caused this minor but necessary change. The shading of the dove vignette to the right of the Capitol dome was also lightened considerably, and the shape of the lightbulb was slightly altered. Federal Proofs have been underappreciated forever, and they are just now beginning to show some signs of increased popularity. This is a spectacular example of what may well be our nation's single most evocative design.

$5 Educational Silver Certificate Progress Proof. A magnificent Five Dollar Educational Proof printed on India Paper. The printing took place on this card, which can be clearly seen from the embossing through to the back. It's very similar to SE-18 from Hessler's U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes. The only difference is in the wording of the pencil notation. On this example, it reads, "Proof taken after Rose and Ponickau had endeavored to produce the effect of Shirlaw & before Smillie's work." The right-hand corner far outside the design has been cut away on this example, but pencil indentations on the card indicate that writing in that corner said something more brief, verbatim: "after Ponickau & before Smillie." But for the cut corner and a few extremely minor age spots, the Proof is perfect.

$2 Legal Tender Progress Proof. This appears to be the final version of this unused but beautiful design, which is listed in Hessler as LE-6e. It is either the exact piece pictured in Hessler, or one identical to it. It's printed on India, which is card mounted, and it was printed on this card, as is plain from the embossing of the printing and from deliberately embossed mirror-image numbers at the left edge which are partially on the India and partially on the card. The Proof is perfect but for some very minor, easily removable foxing spots about the edges. Work on this design was done by the National Bank Note company, and this Proof is likely their product, although it is not identified as such. This unused but beautiful design was based on Robert W. Weir's painting of the Embarkation of the Pilrgims. According to Hessler, the engraver of the work is Joseph P. Ourdan. Hessler illustrates six stages of Progress Proofs, with this example's being the final one.

Fr. 203 $50 1863 Interest Bearing Note Back Proof. A broadly margined proof of the back of this very rare two-year Interest Bearing Note. It's from the completed plate, printed on India paper which has been tipped onto a blue card. The margins are broader than those that would be found on a regular-issue note, the colors are bright and the only problems are some minor wrinkling at the edges, where it's glued to the card, and a tiny split in the bottom margin. An extremely rare early proof.

A perfectly natural note that appears far higher grade.
