Fr. 13 $20 1861 Demand Note Fine, Damaged. This is one of only four Boston Twenty Dollar Demand Notes known to exist, and one of fewer than twenty $20 Demand Notes for all districts combined. It's listed as Good, Damaged in the census based on its appearance in a New Netherlands auction in 1954. It's the only note from the Midwest Collection that has previously been reported, as few records were kept this far back, and the collector finished buying in the 1950's. The previously assigned grade of Damaged Good is a disservice to this note, which grades primarily Fine. The note has tape reinforcing a number of splits, and tape restorations of a missing corner and a few edge nicks, but it has excellent eye appeal. The only other Fr. 13 to reach the market in the last ten years was the repaired Very Good in the Harry Bass Collection which realized $36,800 in 1999. Prior to that, a Fair-Good note was sold by Stack's in 1990 for nearly $14,000. This note, properly re-restored, would grade a solid Fine. It has retained excellent color both face and back, and only small portions of the design are affected by the damage.

Fr. 11 $20 1861 Demand Note Fine. This previously unreported Twenty Dollar Demand Note from the Trask Collection has not seen the light of day since the late '40s or early '50s. It brings the total known for this number to seven, and the total known for all Twenty Dollar Demand Notes to right around 20. It's a remarkably problem-free piece, with none of the replaced paper restorations that are so commonly seen today on major early rarities. A few minor edge splits have been closed, and the note has one or two inconsequential pinholes, but it is an essentially perfect example of a well circulated, but undamaged note. Both signatures are strong, the colors are excellent, and every letter of every word of the design is clear.
