September Heritage-CAA Sale to Feature Unique in Private Hands $500 Silver Certificate
Dallas, Texas: An extraordinary array of rarities in virtually every collecting area including Colonial Currency, Confederate and Obsolete Currency, Error Notes, and Large and Small Type Notes, along with a tremendous offering of large and small National Bank Notes from almost every state as well as three Territories highlight the Heritage - Currency Auctions of America’s two session Fall, 2001 auction. Heritage-CAA’s Fall, 2001 sale will be held in conjunction with the Greater Cincinnati Numismatic Expo at the Sharonville Convention Center, 11355 Chester Road, Sharonville, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday evenings, September 21-22, 2001.The 3000 lot sale features The Walter B. Jones Collection of Confederate Notes and Alabama Obsolete Bank Notes, The Bay Area Collection of Superb Large Size Type Notes, The New England Hoard of Small Size Gold Certificates, A Specialized Collection of Georgia National Bank Notes, the Bob Knudsen, Jr. Collection of Idaho National Bank Notes, and The Great Eastern Collection of National Bank Notes, along with important properties from more than 100 other consignors.
Friday’s session opens with a major offering of Colonial Currency, highlighted by a high grade one shilling Vermont note, estimated at $15,000-up. After a nice selection of Fractional Currency, including numerous gem examples, the sale continues with the Walter B. Jones Collection of Confederate Notes, which, among many rarities, offers a complete set of the T1 through T4 Montgomery issues, with the $500 Montgomery one of the finest to be offered in the past decade. The sale then moves to an extraordinary offering of Obsoletes, the centerpiece of which is the Walter B. Jones Collection of Alabama Notes, which is arguably the finest collection of obsoletes ever assembled from one state and spans almost 500 lots. Of note also in the obsolete section is an archive from the Village Bank of Danvers, Massachusetts, a selection of notes and documents detailing the bank’s history from its founding through its conversion to a National Bank. The sale continues with Errors and Small Size Type Notes, including a major offering of star notes, an original pack of $100 1928 Federal Reserve Notes from the Richmond District, a denomination set of Gold Certificates, including a high grade $500 and $1000, and a pair of high denomination examples, a Gem Crisp Uncirculated $5000 from the Dallas district and an Extremely Fine $10,000 from the rare St. Louis district. Also to be sold is the New England Hoard of Small Size Gold Certificates, a newly discovered treasure trove of almost 150 $10, $20, and $50 examples, the great majority of which grade Choice to Gem Crisp Uncirculated.
The Saturday evening session is devoted solely to Large Size Type Notes and National Bank Notes. It opens with 500 lots of Large Type Notes, including the evening’s star attraction, the only known example of Friedberg 345d in private hands. This $500 Silver Certificate is one of only three collectible examples for its design type, and is estimated at $750,000-up. Anchored by the Bay Area Collection of Superb Large Size Type Notes, the section is replete with high grade rarities, including a condition census Fr. 2 $5 Demand Note, a newly discovered Fr. 163 1880 Legal Tender example (by far the finest of only three in private hands), a Friedberg 1166b $20 1863 Gold Certificate (which sold for $357,500 when last offered), and a high grade $500 Series 1882 Gold Certificate. Saturday’s session concludes with an offering of almost 900 lots of Large and Small National Bank Notes, including a collection of Georgia notes and the almost 200 lots of Idaho Nationals in the Bob Knudsen, Jr. collection, the finest offering from this rare state ever available at public sale. Of special mention in the Nationals is a $50 1882 Date Back from Albuquerque, Territory of New Mexico, a serial number 1 Brown Back from Honolulu, Hawaii Territory, and a $50-50-50-100 uncut sheet from Pueblo, Colorado that is one of only two sheets extant from the entire country in the $50 and $100 denominations. Also of note are a $20 Brown Back from the Fruit Growers NB of Smyrna, Delaware, a McGill, Nevada small note from the first sheet issued, and a lovely Gem Crisp Uncirculated $1.00 First Charter example from Pueblo, Colorado Territory.
