Description

Massachusetts (Act of May 2, 1777) 6% Treasury Loan Certificate due June 1, 1780 Anderson-Smythe MA-7 PMG Very Fine 25.
This bond is from the complex "Sword in Hand" emblem series featuring additional authorizations and redemption due dates. These have a very iconic Massachusetts engraved style. The series was discussed in detail in our Newman Internet Part 3 catalog of the sale held May 3, 2017. Printed from a Nathaniel Hurd plate on laid paper. Approximately 8" square. At upper left, a rattlesnake frames a standing patriot holding a sword and the INDE / PEND / ENCE scroll; the Latin motto circling around is ENSE PETIT PLACIDAM SUB LIBERTATE QUIETAM (By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts motto). Intricate floral bordering is on three sides, and the top has a double-line frame. The left end is indented, as issued. Mixed-font obligations are across with spaces for the date, serial number, denomination, issuee, and signatures. The obligation specifies authority granted under George II for the bonds (the same as in the obligation of Revere-engraved MA-1 "King Philip" bonds). "Treas'r" is written. An embossed stamp is on the text portion. No. 200 (serial numbers 1-500, per Anderson). Issued for 29 Pounds, June 1, 1777. Signed by committee members and Henry Gardner (pen-cancelled). PMG notes this as "Pen Cancelled" and with "Splits," both of which are typical. This is a sharp-looking Nathanial Hurd "Sword in Hand" bond. Underappreciated until the past few years, these are now receiving their well-deserved recognition from the collecting community.
From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
