Description

South Carolina February 8, 1779 $60 PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
A beautifully margined and attractive example of this extremely popular issue. Both the faces and backs of these notes were elaborately engraved by Thomas Coram of Charleston, South Carolina. The face vignette is of a seated Liberty figure holding a cornucopia, surrounded by a ribbon with the Latin motto "MUTUA DEFENSIO TUTISSIMA," which Newman translates as "Mutual defense is safest." The back features a lyre surrounded by horns, flags, and vines. The apparent grade is assigned for small edge splits and tears, all of which are minor. The note is completely unrestored and unmolested. A very nice example of a less commonly seen denomination.
