Description

Excessively Rare Florida 1875 $5
One of Four First Charter Notes Reported for the State

Pensacola, FL - $5 1875 Fr. 404 The First National Bank Ch. # 2490 PMG Very Good 10.
A spectacular Florida rarity that is one of only four First Charter notes reported from the Sunshine State, this is the first of that number to cross the auction block since a 1976 Hickman-Oakes sale. Just two banks were open in Florida during the First Charter Period - one in Jacksonville, which remains unreported and one in Pensacola, which issued only 1875 $5s. To date, four notes are in the census, but, as mentioned, none have been publicly offered in almost 50 years. This example has seen its share of circulation, but does remain intact, displaying nice color and signatures for the grade. With the other three known First Charter Fives tied up in long-term holdings, it may be many years before another opportunity arrives to acquire another very rare Florida First Charter note.
