Description

State of Massachusetts Bay Six Percent Treasury Certificate £12, 10s Dec. 1, 1777 Anderson MA 12 Very Fine-Extremely Fine.
A beautifully printed certificate that was authorized on October 13 & 22, 1777 and due on March 1, 1782 with the pine tree encircled by a rattlesnake vignette at upper left. This indented piece was payable to Fear Reed and signed by I. Scollay, Eze. Price, and P. Boyer (Committee) and H. Gardner (treasurer). Gardner's signature is crossed out with several "X"s as a means of cancellation. It is believed that approximately 2500 of these were issued. Anderson lists them as rarity Low R7 on page 132 in The Price of Liberty, indicating 7-12 known examples when the book was published in 1983. A quick perusal of our records indicates this is only the second example of this Anderson number that we have handled and this piece is far superior in visual appeal. This piece is mounted on a heavy piece of paper that is folded in half at left and has a cut out portion that provides a view of the back of the certificate. The folded piece measures 15 inches tall by 9 1/2 inches wide. The certificate itself displays a number of small holes and a few light internal splits that pose minimal distraction due to the folded back.
