Description

Ellenville, NY - $10 1875 Fr. 418 The Home NB Ch. # 2117
A rare Ulster County bank from a much sought after location. The census shows only three First Charters, an Original Series ace, an Original Series $5, and this 1875 $10, with this specimen by far the finest of the group. The first of two state seals found on New York Nationals graces the reverse of this note. All First Charters used the first seal, while Brown Backs utilized both the first and second seals. The differences between the seals are relatively minor, with the first showing a central shield depicting water, mountains, and a sunrise. Atop the shield is a rampant eagle, and flanking the shield are the figures of Justice and Liberty. At the bottom, a banner contains the state motto Excelsior, meaning "Ever Upward", a motto which has governed the state's tax policies since the seal was originally devised in 1777. PCGS Apparent Very Fine 35, with the Apparent grade assigned only because of a small edge split at the top right that is impossible to see and affects absolutely nothing.
