Description

Subject of Full Page Color Plate in 1990 ABNCo Archives Sale Catalog

Lockport, NY- Niagara County Bank $1 July 1,1856 G2a Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The bank was organized in 1856, succeeding the Canal Bank of Lockport, and remained in business until it became the Niagara County National Bank in 1864. What the $1 note lacks in vignettes, with only an oval portrait of Henry Clay and the bank department die to be found, it more than makes up for with color. An intricate deep red-brown background covers most of the note, with cutouts for the portrait, denominational counter, bank title, signature spaces, and end panel. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. This note was part of a sheet considered so beautiful that the sheet was shown in color on page 191 of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale catalog. We believe that this note and its companion sheetmate are likely the only surviving Proofs of the design and denomination at present.
