Description

$20 African-American Face Reserve Obligation Series 90 Five Consecutive Examples.
A Frederick Douglass political statement note in the style of a United States Federal Reserve Note, but with a portrait of the great 19th century civil rights activist, and friend of Abraham Lincoln, on its face. The note states at upper center on face: "African-American Face Reserve Obligation (AFRO)// Pay in United States Twenty Dollars." These notes were issued to encourage black enterprises by its use instead of United States paper money among participating institutions. These notes were sold for United States paper money, but since they could only be spent in the black community, their use assured sales to black-owned and operated businesses. The payment clause at upper left on the face reads: "The face amount denomination is redeemable in U.S. dollars at participating banks." The multi-colored black, green, and red note is Series 90 (1990?). Its back has an image of the Douglass Home, Washington, D.C. and the legend "This certificate is redeemable for all trade, merchandise or services for businesses under agreement with African-American Face Reserve Obligation, or those displaying this logo." The logo of A.F.R.O. appears at upper left and upper right on back. Gem Crisp Uncirculated. (Total: 5 notes)
