Description
Scarce and Original $6 Farmers Bank Proof
Richmond, VA- Farmers Bank of Virginia $6 18__ Design 6B
Jones-Littlefield BR25-35 Proof PMG About Uncirculated 55
EPQ.The Farmers Bank of Virginia was one of the state's large multi-branch institutions that was authorized in 1812 and served the state until after the Civil War, with branches in Alexandria, Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Danville, Farmville, Fredericksburg, Lewisburg, Lynchburg, Norfolk, Petersburg, Winchester, and Wytheville. The bank was physically destroyed during the fall of Richmond and it was shortly thereafter, for all intents and purposes, out of business. An official notice on December 23, 1865 indicates that the bank was redeeming its notes in gold at 30¢ on the dollar or at 20¢ on the dollar with an additional unspecified amount from any surplus realized after the bank was wound up. On February 5, 1866, newspapers were reporting that a number of former officers of the Farmers Bank of Virginia were involved with the Planters National Bank of Richmond which had been chartered in January, 1866. This $6 design was intended for use by any branch of the bank and features a vignette of a man seated with his dog flanked by vignettes of another man with his dog at left and a rather dapper Lafayette standing with his top hat and cane at right. The note is printed on India paper mounted on an original archive paper sheet with no forms of cancellation present. It is very likely that this note was part of a single sheet of $9-$8-$7-$6 Proofs that appeared as Lot 2003 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives Sale. Furthermore it appears that this and the following three odd denomination Proof notes ($7, $8, and $9) from this issuer appearing in this auction were all part of the same sheet based on the faint transfer images from another sheet that appear on the back each note. Very likely unique in Proof form.
