Description

Valley City, ND - $20 1882 Brown Back Fr. 504 The First NB Ch. # (W)2548
Any North Dakota Brown Back is a pretty scarce item, with the census showing fewer than thirty examples of all denominations, but $20 Brown Backs are just plain rare, with this one of only six in the census, one of which is ensconced in an institutional holding. This is the highest grade of the six, none of which has been available to collectors at public sale since 1995. This piece has been off the market since it was obtained by our consignor in 1986, a mere twenty six years ago. The state seal on the reverse tells an interesting story. When the Dakota Territory was split into the states of North and South Dakota on November 2, 1889, the state of North Dakota adopted the seal of the Dakota Territory, which is what appears on all state issue notes from North Dakota. There were a few modifications of the seal used on Dakota Territory notes, with the new seal utilizing a different tree in the center and adding an Indian with a spear pursuing a buffalo. At the top is the motto Liberty and Union Now and Forever, One and Inseparable, which was the old Territorial motto. The date Oct. 1, 1889, which was the date the state constitution was adopted, is found to the left and right of the tree. PCGS Very Fine 20.
