Description
Unique First Issue Die Proof Presentation Set.
First Issue Proof Denomination Set.This set has been together since its sale as Lot 867 in our January 1997 Milt Friedberg auction. It was described there, "Each of the four notes has a razor-sharp impression from the brand-new master plate. An investigation of these notes has brought out the fact that they were apparently a set of die proofs prepared as a presentation item for President Andrew Johnson. Each piece is canceled with four holes near the bottom. Milt felt that this was done at the Treasury Department to indicate that the notes were not meant for circulation. Each die proof is slightly larger than its Regular Issue or normal Specimen counterpart. All four are printed on a soft, India-like paper very similar to that used for the First Issue notes that are mounted in the Treasury Presentation Books. The Ten Cent and Fifty Cent (1P10F.1d and 1P50F.1d) color is a slightly bluer-green than the green color of the regular First Issue Ten Cent and Fifty Cent pieces. The brown ink used on the Five Cent and Twenty-five Cent (Milton 1P5F.1d and 1P25F.1e) appears markedly different than the brown of the Regular Issue notes; this is most likely due to these die proofs being printed on white stock rather than the normal yellow. But for these color differences, the designs of the Proofs are identical to the Specimen and Regular Issue circulating notes with one exception - the frame line of the Five Cent is a double rule on this Proof. The two green notes exhibit numbers in their top margins: a bold "944" on the Ten Cent note and a weakly engraved "946" on the Fifty Cent. All four notes are plated in, The Encyclopedia of United States Postage & Fractional Currency by Milton R. Friedberg, even though the 5 Cent note is not listed as such on the third party back label. This unique set likely represents some of the earliest impressions from the newly completed master plate." The set has now been graded by PMG, and in ascending denomination order, the grades are Choice Uncirculated 64, Choice Uncirculated 64, About Uncirculated 55, and Choice Uncirculated 64. The previous pedigree for this set was from the January 7, 1970 Robert Siegel auction, where Milt acquired it. (Total: 4 notes)
