Description

$10,000 U.S. Treasury Bearer Bond. This is a 7 5/8% U.S. Treasury Bearer Bond of 2002-2007. The issue date of the bond was February 15, 1977, and the bond paid coupons of $381.25 every six months on the fifteenth of February and the fifteenth of August. The bond was callable on or after February 15, 2002, and, in fact, was called at the earliest possible date. The first fifty coupons have been cashed in, and coupons 51 through 60 remain. Each of these coupons is now worthless, as interest stopped when the bond was called, but the bond itself remains redeemable to the bearer for its face value of $10,000. This is the only $10,000 Bearer Bond of this issue that we have seen, and it may well be the only example not to have been redeemed at the call, as the high face value combined with the end of the interest made keeping this bond as a collectible an unlikely choice for the bond holder. With the enthusiasm for bond collecting at an all-time high, it is quite likely that this bond will realize considerably in excess of its face value.
