1891 Five Dollar Silver: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ

Fr. 267 $5 1891 Silver Certificate PCGS Gem New 66PPQ.
A spectacular example of this rarer type. These 1891 Open Back Five Dollar Silvers are less expensive than the much more common Silver Dollar Back type, due entirely to the popularity of the latter. In reality, Silver Dollar Backs are more than twice as common, but they sell for more regardless, as the five silver dollars on the back seem to enamor people. This is the first PCGS 66PPQ that we've handled for this number. We sold two PCGS 67PPQ's, both in 2006. The one in April brought $23,000, and the one in September brought $19,000. Our most recent sale of a 66 was a PMG 66 EPQ at last year's FUN show sale which realized $13,000. This note is certainly its equal, if not a touch better, and the market is certainly a bit stronger. We would anticipate a realization slightly in excess of last year's price.
