Petersburg, VA- Bank of the City of Petersburg $20 18__ as G6b as Jones-Littlefield BP25-30 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was not organized until 1860 and did not survive the war, closing by the time the city fell in April, 1865. The note features the popular vignette Black and White Beauties based on a painting by LeRoy as well as a portrait of Washington, and a vignette of a Native American maiden. The note is printed in black, red and green, and presents a very striking appearance. It is printed on India paper and mounted on cardstock with the usual small POCs in the signature lines (fewer than on many of the issued notes from this bank which are often heavily cancelled). Neither the bank nor this denomination appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. This note is very rare and seldom seen in Proof form.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part II
