Fr. 1216a $500 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 25. The four earlier $500 1882 Gold Certificate types are essentially uncollectible. There are four different small red treasury seal types available to collectors: three dated 1882 and the final 1922 series type. On the face, Abraham Lincoln as engraved by Charles Burt is at the left, and there are yellow-gold overprints with blue serial numbers. The orange back features Eagle with Flag. There are 34 Fr. 1216a examples documented in Track & Price, all circulated. The present example is a perfect representative of this major high-denomination Gold Certificate design. Clean surfaces on both sides exhibit its brilliant colors well, and it is nicely framed on both sides. The note is slightly under-graded on the census, but it was likely recorded long ago. Mike acquired this from Don Kelly at the 2001 Memphis show. This is a difficult Friedberg number to find in such a perfect mid-grade level, with strictly original paper surfaces and superior eye-appeal. A great opportunity to acquire a beautiful note that has been off the market for nearly two decades. From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
