Alabama Furnace, AL- Alabama Iron Company 25¢ Mar. 17, 1881 Gunther-Derby AO-101-$.25a Rosene 307-2 PMG Very Fine 25. The Alabama Iron Company was organized in 1872 and commenced operations on October 1, 1873, on the site of the old Slat Creek Iron Works which had been destroyed during the Civil War. The exact date of the company's failure is unclear, but it was in receivership by early 1913. The 25¢ company store note has a male portrait, perhaps of Stephen S. Glidden, president of the company, at left and a green back featuring "25" in a large round green die. The note was redeemable in dry goods. The text on the note clearly states that it will be refused or discounted if damaged or mutilated. At present, we are aware of two examples of this denomination, with the last example in lower condition crossing the auction block for $333 almost a quarter of a century ago. This example was previously mounted.
