Little Rock, AR- State of Arkansas $1 Jan. 16, 1874 Cr. 63 Rothert 395-1 PMG Choice Very Fine 35. Emitted under the Act of March 16, 1871, this ace bore interest at a rate of five percent and was redeemable in payment of county and state dues and taxes, with the exception of interest on public debt. Produced by the NBNCo, this $1 showcases ears of corn contained in a large basket at left, a farmer seated on a panel of fencing and holding a large scythe at center, and a cotton boll at right. Brown "1" protectors flank the central depiction, and a micro-letter border finishes the face's layout. The ornate brown back details the note's terms at center, and symmetrical and cycloidal design elements are present. These elements often characterize designs produced by the NBNCo and were heavily utilized due to the introduction of Cyrus Durand's geometric lathe. This type received an R10 rarity rating, 5-15 known, in the 2007 Shull reference, as the author affirms that many were redeemed, leaving few to trade amongst collectors. We have auctioned just three different examples previously. Two of that number crossed our auction block in 2021, and both representatives were also certified at the PMG Choice VF 35 level. One piece, which was none other than our current offering, brought $1,200 in April 2021, while the other brought $840 in October 2021. We will estimate in the middle of those two figures, but as opportunities to acquire a nice example of this variation are quite uncommon, we could very well see our conservative evaluation tested or exceeded.
