Fayetteville, AR- Bank of the State of Arkansas, Branch $20 Jan 8, 1839 G146 Rothert 186-3 PMG Very Fine 25.
The Bank of the State of Arkansas was incorporated on August 15, 1837, and in January 1838, the branch at Fayetteville opened. Likely due to financial difficulties brought on by the Panic of 1837, the institution suspended specie payments on its notes on October 31, 1839, and in January 1843, it was placed into liquidation. The intricately designed $20 featured in this lot includes a vignette of an antebellum steamboat at upper center, an allegorical representation of Proserpina, Mercury, and Vulcan designed and engraved by Freeman Rawdon at right, and a prancing stag at lower center. Micro-lettering surrounds the layout in an intricate border. The surviving population of notes of this design and denomination likely does not exceed around eight representatives. We offered a PMG VF 20 certified example, also from the Fayetteville branch, of this scarcer Rawdon, Wright & Hatch production in October 2023 which brought $660. Based upon this previous realization, we should see our conservative estimate exceeded tonight.
