Straits Settlements Asiatic Banking Corporation, Singapore 500 Dollars ND (ca. 1860s) Pick S79r KNB5 Remainder
PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The Asiatic Banking Corporation was a short-lived entity in the mid-1860s that operated in British India, Ceylon, Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, and the Straits Settlements. During its brief existence, banknotes were prepared for Britain's Asian colonies, although it appears that no notes were issued officially. Two sets of denominations for each bank branch were prepared by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company in 1985, but otherwise, few, if any, examples are known to exist. Some Ceylonese notes are extant with circulation, but that is most likely not the case of the other cities of issue. This offering is a $500 prepared for the Singapore branch of the bank. It bears a serial number of 000207, but it is undated and unsigned. The uniface front remains excellent, with all details bold and clear. The back shows some stains, which have been lightened, and mounting remnants. This is the only example graded in the
PMG Population Report, at the time of writing, and it may be unique or one of only a few examples extant. Exceptionally rare and from the first few decades of British rule in Singapore.
