Fr. 93c $10 1862 Legal Tender PCGS About New 53PPQ.
A Series 20 note with serial number 14627-C that is the fifth highest graded out of the 55 Fr. 93c notes documented by Track & Price. The note in this lot and also the sole highest graded example, a PMG 64 EPQ, are the only two of the five to have earned a PPQ or EPQ grade modifier. We auctioned another Series 20 example with serial 14629-A and grading PMG AU 55 for $18,000 in January 2024. Friedberg 93c has a "starburst" in the center of the bottom border. One of the main characteristics of Friedberg numbers 93-93f are whether or not the note has a "starburst" at bottom center. The earliest mentioning of this "starburst" design feature that this cataloger remembers is in June 1993 at the Memphis International Paper Money Show. On display across the street from the paper money show at the Memphis Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis was a display of 50 of the best notes out of approximately 2,000 large size notes that the FRB of San Francisco had found inside a lockbox in a safe during their recent renovation. Speculation at the time was that these notes had been put away during the 1920s by an unknown employee. After all of the notes were inventoried in December 1992 and March 1993 by an advanced New York paper money collector who was recruited especially for this project, the FRB of San Francisco was open to the idea of a one day Memphis exhibition on June 18, 1993. At that exhibit, paper money researcher Doug Murray discussed the significance of these $10 Legal Tender Notes with and without the "starburst." Those events in 1992-93 started the further refining of Fr. 93 that culminated with the 21st 2017 edition of Paper Money of the United States listing eight Friedberg numbers within 93-93f. Further details of this government exhibit are that an eight page booklet was available and there were only 125 tickets available for viewing this one day, never to have been repeated event. The July 12, 1993 Coin World on pages three and eight carried an article on this exhibit entitled, "Rare Notes "Forgotten" for 60 Years Enrich 1993 World Paper Money Show." Notes in the Memphis exhibit and others in the holdings of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco are used in their "American Currency Exhibit" that opened on April 30, 1997 in their lobby.
