Perforated serial numbers 000000 are easily observed against their dark backgrounds on this $10 Legal Face Proof. Hessler has only one Fr. 97 Proof enumerated and it consists of both sides, thus making the format in this lot unique. Also, issued notes are rare; Track & Price has recorded only 17 serial numbers. In fact, we see that the example in this lot has earned a grade higher than any listed for the issued Fr. 97 notes in Track & Price. This charming Face Proof was printed on India paper, cut down to note size, mounted on bonded paper in an album, and removed from the album with care. The mounting paper for this Face Proof has a large amount of the watermark and it is correctly oriented for reading, "(Dalton M)ass 1908 Bond No. 36 / Crane & Co Dalto(n). Crane & Co has supplied the BEP with paper since 1879. The year "1908" tells us the approximate date of the original album that held many of the Proofs in this auction.
