Due to the embossing of several of the Back Proof's design elements on the back of the cardstock, we believe that the India paper was attached to the cardstock prior to this piece being printed. This resulted in a boldly inked back design printed on the India paper. The India paper has lost paper in three places along the edges, but the cardstock remains undamaged. PMG also mentions a minor repair on the back label. On page 21 of the 2004 second edition of U.S. Essay, Proof and Specimen Notes by Gene Hessler, the population figure for Hessler 242 is stated as four.
