Description:
One of Three Known
New York, NY- Knickerbocker Bank of the City of New York $2 G4a Proof
A short-lived bank that only operated from 1851 until failing in 1854, with all of the notes from this bank listed as SENC, Surviving Example Not Confirmed, in the Haxby reference, although at least one note has surfaced since that time. PCGS assigned a grade of Very Choice New 64PPQ. The imprint is Baldwin, Adams & Co. New York on this piece and the engraver was George D. Baldwin. Only three examples are reported bearing the Type VI Santa vignette, with all three from this bank. A signed and issued example grading Fine 15 recently sold at auction for $40,250, indicating the importance of this note to collectors, who can not complete a set by vignette type without obtaining one of the three examples extant of this note. Any estimate here of this spectacular Proof is simply a guess, but it would come as no surprise to see the hammer fall well into the range of...
