Unique for the BankJacksonville, FL - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 471 The Merchants NB Ch. # 4332
A unique Florida rarity which is offered here to the collecting fraternity for the first time. It comes from a bank which issued $5 Brown Backs only for less than seven years before the receiver arrived to close its doors forever early in 1897. By 1915, the amount of currency in circulation from this institution had dropped to $335. This note is the only surviving example, and ranks among the most significant Florida notes to be offered to collectors during the past two decades. Fortunately, it is a high grade piece with good color and strong signatures. PCGS has mentioned some masked rust stains and repairs, but the repairs are minor and the rust barely detracts from the note's overall appearance. Any estimate here is simply a guess, but if rarity and desirability are any guide, our estimate for this unique note may well be exceeded this evening. PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 40.
