Description
Horizontal Format Vignette Book.This is only the third horizontal format vignette book that we have had the privilege of handling. It's the normal large size volume with approximately 140 vignettes--an extremely high percentage of which were employed on US currency. The title page has the normal Treasury Department BEP information along with a red Treasury seal. George W. Casilear is listed as Superintendent of Engravers dating this book to pre-1885 when his long tenure was terminated. There are mild foxing stains here and there, but they are primarily on the tissue inter-leaves affecting the actual vignette pages to a far lesser degree. Few of the vignettes themselves are effected by significant foxing. The book has the normal gold-leaf cover and is composed of an extremely attractive dark brown leather. The binding is tight, the covers and spine are original and undamaged, and the book is pristine save for the aforementioned foxing, and a book dealer's label across from the flyleaf. There is also minor pencil on the flyleaf itself. The book was presented to the Honorable B.J. Lossing, who we believe to be Benson J. Lossing who lived primarily in New York state between 1813 and 1891. Lossing was an editor in Poughkeepsie at an early age, and later worked as an engraver and book publisher in New York City. His most notable work was the two-volume pictorial field book of the Revolution published between 1850 and 1852. We've sold several other examples over the years--two in 2006 that realized just over $5,000 apiece.
