Lovely Fully Original Horizontal Format Vignette Book
Horizontal Format Vignette Book.This is only the second horizontal format vignette book that we have had the privilege of handling. It's the normal large size volume with approximately 140 vignettes--an extremely high percentage of which were employed on US currency. The title page has the normal Treasury Department BEP information along with a red Treasury seal. George W. Casilear is listed as Superintendent of Engravers dating this book to pre-1885 when his long tenure was terminated. There are a few mild foxing stains here and there, but the vast majority of the pages are bright and completely stain free. The foxing, when it does appear, tends to be confined to the blank backs of the pages or the tissue inter-leaves. Few of the vignettes themselves are effected by any foxing. The book has the normal gold-leaf cover and at a glance, the leather appears black, but under very good light, it is clearly dark green. The binding is tight, the covers and spine are original and undamaged, and the book is pristine save for very minor foxing and an ex-libris bookplate of Guy M. Nelson, M.D., on the inside front cover. We've sold several other examples over the years, the two most recent of which we sold in 2006 realized just over $5,000 apiece.
