Fr. 199 $100 1863 Interest Bearing Note -- One of Three Known

Fr. 199 $100 1863 Interest Bearing Note Choice Very Fine. Only three examples of this number are known, one of which is simply reported by grade and serial number and has never been seen on the market. The other two notes are virtually identical. The Taylor Family example was sold as lot 16752 in our sale of three months ago, and it more than doubled our estimate, realizing $126,500. We can not remember a previous situation where a rarity of this magnitude has appeared with such a short gap in time, but we are certain the gentleman who went home as the disappointed underbidder in February will be thrilled at this second opportunity. Both notes are utterly identical in grade, neither with any repair or restoration and both with ideal color. This note has a slight edge for two reasons. First, and most importantly, the centering is better. This piece has four full margins and the other example was quite close at the top left. Secondly, we've already sold the other one, and we're selling this one now, so of course it's better. Kidding aside, this is one magnificent piece of currency and it will very likely realize just about the same price as the Taylor piece.
