Fr. 212d--With All Five Coupons
Fr. 212d $50 1865 Interest Bearing Note CGA Very Fine 30. This Fr. 212d is from the higher serial number range with the July 15, 1865 date printed above Spinner's signature. This type also has the addition of a red vertical printing at the left end of the face "The Government reserves the right of paying in COIN, the interest on this Note at the rate of six per cent. per annum." There are six examples known of this type, four of which have retained no coupons, and two which have retained all five coupons. This is one of the notes that has retained all five coupons. The other, an identically graded piece, resides in the Smithsonian Institution, having been transferred there in 1978. One of the no couponed pieces is also in the Smithsonian. This example has an illustrious pedigree having according to the Gengerke reference, been in Barney Bluestone's November 1944 sale, then onto F.C.C. Boyd, then to New Netherlands, on to Robert Friedberg, followed by Robert Schermerhorn, then to Amon Carter, and eventually into the Harry Bass Research Foundation. When Bowers and Merena sold the Bass notes in May of 1999, this spectacular rarity realized $109,250. Just one year later, on June 17, 2000, Lyn Knight sold it in his Memphis sale for $181,500. We would imagine that this incredible piece should fall between those two numbers this evening.Auction Info
