Description:
Newly Discovered and Unique 1880 Bank of Ottawa $5
Ottawa, ON- The Bank of Ottawa $5 November 2, 1880 Ch. # 565-12-02b
A logging vignette was used for the center design on this $5 1880 Ottawa issue. This note is an unlikely survivor with just three other $5 examples known--all from a small near-consecutive run. Of those three, one resides in the National Currency Collection, and another is permanently impounded in an institutional collection, while another is in the tight hands of a collector. This piece however is different than the other pieces as it is the only one to feature blue sheet numbers. Currently the Charlton book does not differentiate by number color and the Canadian census is simply transposed between denominations, listing the previously known $5s with blue numbers while they are in fact red. Robert J. Graham, the editor of the Charlton reference Canadian Bank Notes confirmed this information. Updates to the census and a new catalog number for the blue number variety which is unique on this note are forthcoming. This newly discovered piece shows even circulation and a still-bold-penned signature of George Burn. With few options for collectors in both varieties, it is likely to attract plenty of bidder interest. The paper is wholesome, with still bold printed details. PMG Choice Fine 15.
