Description:

Very Rare Fr. 97 - One of Thirteen Known

Fr. 97 $10 1875 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 30. One of the rarest of all the Legal Tender notes, with a total census of only thirteen pieces, none of which has ever been graded uncirculated. In fact, neither of the two grading services has ever seen an AU of this number. This VF 30 is the highest yet graded by PMG. Tom acquired this important note from our November 1992 sale of the University of Missouri holdings. The record price for a Fr. 97 was for the uncertified AU which we sold in January of 2006 for $34,500. The highest certified example to reach the market was in that same sale where we sold a PCGS 35 for $25,875. Two years later, in a far more sophisticated market for rare notes, we expect the price to fly right by those numbers."
