Description:

Finest Known Second NB of New Mexico at Santa Fe Territorial

Santa Fe, NMT - $5 1875 Fr. 408 The Second NB of New Mexico at Santa Fe Ch. # 2024
A gorgeous Territorial example which is easily the finest note known on this short lived bank which issued First Charters only before liquidating at the expiration of its charter in 1892. This is a simply spectacular piece which traces its pedigree to the April, 1956 sale of the T. James Clarke collection by New Netherlands Coin Company of New York City. In an era when even the rarest and most desirable of National Bank Notes might receive a two line write-up at most, this note was boxed in the catalogue and given a multi-paragraph description. The note was later acquired by Jack Everson, a well known collector of Texas and New Mexico Nationals, and realized the highest price of any note in Jack's New Mexico holdings (including his unique Farmington example) when Jack's collection was sold back in 1997. Bright Extremely Fine, with the appearance of a note which left the press this morning, a magnificent Territorial that is truly fit for the finest of collections.
An interesting aside here...Tom acquired this note not because of its Territorial status, but because this Friedberg number is an exceptionally scarce signature combination and one he needed for his number set. Fr. 408 was long considered the rarest of the First Charter numbers (and is mentioned as such in William Dillistin's monograph on early National Bank Notes). Even today, only about a half dozen Fr. 408's are known from all issuers combined.
