Czechoslovakia- Theresienstadt Ghetto Scrip 1; 2; 5; 10; 20; 50; and 100 Kronen 1.01.1943 Campbell 4111-4117
This lot contains a complete denomination set of this scrip. Theresienstadt served as a "model" by the Nazis in an attempt to provide the Red Cross and the international community with a distorted image of how prisoners were being treated by them, rather than displaying what was in actuality taking place. The camp was essentially a transit camp for those being sent to the death camps in occupied Poland. The scrip from this concentration camp was part of the propaganda efforts and, although money was given to the prisoners monthly, it had little purchasing power. The notes were designed by Jewish inmate Petr Kien and feature a portrait of Moses holding the Ten Commandments. The original image was revised in a variety of ways including making Moses' hair curlier, his nose more hooked, and changing his fingers to make them gnarled and twisted; a distorted image that fit with the Nazi's views of Jews. The notes bear the signature of Jacob Edelstein, the Jewish Elder in the camp. The notes range from Choice About Uncirculated to Choice Crisp Uncirculated. (Total: 7 notes)
