Description

Excessively Rare $2 1928B Legal Tender- One of Five Known

Fr. 1503* $2 1928B Legal Tender. Very Good+.
This is one of the classic rarities in the field of small size notes, an item up there in rarity and desirability with the 1804 dollar or the 1913 Liberty Head nickel. Only five surviving examples have been recorded, with this piece only the second we have had to offer in our thirty plus years in numismatics. The last example of this rare star to be publicly offered came when we sold the piece formerly owned by Amon Carter, Jr. in our Orlando sale three years ago. That piece, grading Fine, saw the hammer drop at $22,000 (on a pre-sale estimate of $10,000-15,000) after an epic floor battle between two determined bidders. This example, from the Steele collection, is a solid note for the grade, with a bright red overprint and no repairs or defects. In the best market ever for small size rarities, we would not be at all surprised to see this note reach or even exceed our likely conservative estimate.
Purchased from Mid-American Currency in March of 1997.
