Lovely & Rare Fr. 97--Tied for Finest Known
Fr. 97 $10 1875 Legal Tender Choice About New. We sold this note once before in our September 2003 sale with the following description, "Fr. 97 is a classically rare note. CAA has handled only a single example in our 33 sales, and that was an Extra Fine back in 1992. This note, which our consignor pedigrees to the Amon Carter Collection, is one of only ten examples known to exist. At the top of the grade range, three others are called AU, and two have been called EF. No uncirculated example is known. One of the EF's was sold in a March 2001 auction by Lyn Knight for $28,600. This note has the eye appeal of a perfect Gem piece, with boardwalk margins all around, ideal centering and super bright colors, including the full-strength pink seal and pink "TEN" flourish. This note has a single, difficult-to-see center fold but is otherwise pristine. If it's not the finest known Fr. 97, it's certainly tied for that distinction. A challenging note to estimate on today's rapidly appreciating market for rare notes." At that sale, this note realized a hair over $24,000. The note remains every bit as rare today, but with quite a few new players pursuing these truly rare numbers, we would expect a far stronger realization.Auction Info
