Gem New 65PPQ Serial Number One San Francisco $20 Red Seal
Fr. 963a $20 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.As the denominations increase, so does the rarity of each of these number 1 notes. This is one of three serial number 1 $20 Red Seals extant. The Chicago district example is in the collection of the Chicago Federal Reserve Bank, while the Kansas City district specimen is in public hands, having last appeared in a 2004 auction, where it realized $39,100. In any side by side comparison, were one ever to take place, this specimen would win hands down, as the Kansas City note is barely uncirculated while this piece is a superlative original Gem in all respects. It is a rare Friedberg number as well, with the census indicating only eight examples extant, one of which is damaged. The highest grade listed is Extremely Fine, with even the San Francisco Fed collection making do with a Very Good example...which is better than the massive Flynn collection, which contained no Fr. 963a at all.
