Attractive $100 Spread Eagle Legal Tender Note
Fr. 167a $100 1863 Legal Tender PMG Very Fine 20 Net.The Fr. 167a census stands at only twenty two pieces, with six of that number impounded in museum or institutional collections. None have been available to collectors since 2008, when we sold a PCGS About New 58 for $207,000. This piece has been off the market since its appearance in a 1997 auction, where it was graded Very Fine-Extremely Fine. This piece is a virtual duplicate to the Dauer collection specimen which we sold in 2007 for $63,250, right down to the repaired edge splits that caused PMG to assign a net grade to both examples. Any Spread Eagle is a significant rarity, and this is one of the nicer ones we have handled during the past two decades.
