Unique Set of Small Size Proof Notes Furnished by William H. Woodin
Set of Front and Back Die Proofs Featuring a $1 1928 Legal Tender Note and $5 through $100 Chicago 1929 FRBNs.This lot contains a matted and framed set of front and back die proofs featuring a Fr. 1500 $1 1928 Legal Tender Note; Fr. 1850-G $5 1929 FRBN; Fr. 1860-G $10 1929 FRBN; Fr. 1870-G $20 1929 FRBN; Fr. 1880-G $50 1929 FRBN; and a Fr. 1890-G $100 1929 FRBN. All six of the notes display serial number A000000A.
The Die Proofs have been consigned by the family of James H. Douglas and come with an impeccable pedigree. Included in the lot is a letter typed on stationary from the Secretary of the Treasury dated June 14, 1933 that was directed to Mr. A.W. Hall, Director, Bureau of Engraving and Printing and states, "You are hereby authorized to furnish to Mr. James H. Douglas, Lake Forest, Illinois, die proofs, on die proof paper, of the face and back of Federal reserve bank notes of the denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100, series of 1929, taking his receipt therefor (sic) in duplicate." The letter is signed by Secretary of the Treasury William H. Woodin.
The letter is glued onto the back of the frame. In addition to those five notes, a $1 Legal Tender Note is also included. The letter is frayed at the margins, with areas of paper loss observed, and has a number of insect holes near bottom center. Importantly, none of the text is affected whatsoever by those issues.
Douglas served as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury under Ogden Mills from February 1932 to June 1933. Douglas was also Secretary of the Air Force under President Eisenhower as well as Deputy Secretary of Defense. Douglas served in World War II and earned a Distinguished Service Medal as well as a Medal of Freedom in 1960 for his government service.
The Proofs are glued to their backing, but the glue residue is quite limited and the appearance of the Proofs is excellent. We have never before seen any Proof examples of any Federal Reserve Bank Note, let alone a full denomination set, (or, for that matter, a 1928 $1 Legal Proof).
A truly spectacular item with an impeccable pedigree that is difficult to estimate...
