Description
Fr. 1383a Fractional Currency Shield, With Green Background. To our best knowledge there are only about a dozen Green Shields in existence, and we have personally examined ten of them. This is among the very finest that we've handled, with the Milt Friedberg example which we sold in January 1997 being the finest. The green background color on this Shield is as close to perfect as it gets, with all of the fine design elements clear and intact. The eagle and stars at the top of the Shield are as boldly green as the back of a large size note, without the slightest hint of fading. The great majority of the notes are nearly fully bright, with the exception being the 25¢ Second Issue back, which is always faded on Shields. The Shield has the ubiquitous water staining at the bottom which has affected four of the notes - the 3¢ back, both of the 3¢ faces, and the Clark Green Back. All of the other notes are pristine and as always on shields all four hand signed notes are the Colby-Spinner varieties. The Grant-Sherman hand signed Colby-Spinner is the key note on this shield, as those Fr. 1273SPs were found only on pink and green shields. A second area of waterstaining is observed at the top, but is far milder and does not affect any notes. In the proper hands (not mine) these water stains are reversible and this would be equal to the finest Green Shield in existence with that conservation. The water stains, while worthy of mention, are truly not that distracting. The Shield is in a modern frame with a wonderful 1860s look and the custom mat perfectly complements the colors of the notes as well as the green background. A spectacular showpiece sure to please its new owner.
