Description

Fabulous Bank of Tennessee Signed and Issued $500

Nashville, TN- Bank of Tennessee $500 Sept. 1, 1860 G506a Garland 902
A magnificent high denomination example which is one of the greatest obsoletes we have ever had the privilege of selling. It is a multi-colored piece, fully signed and issued, with the face printed in black and red and the reverse a deep blue. The vignettes include Boy & Birds Nest engraved by James Bannister. We know of only one other example, with that piece off the market for many years and unlikely to be available for many years to come. Any estimate here is simply a guess, as this is the ultimate in obsoletes for the state of Tennessee, but if rarity, desirability and demand are any guide, a realization in the low five figure range is certainly not out of the question. PCGS Very Fine 20, with seven punch cancels, no doubt what ensured the survival of this wonderful note.
