PMG Gem Large Brown Seal $50 Legal
Fr. 161 $50 1880 Legal Tender PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ. This Large Brown Seal $50 Legal has been awarded PMG's coveted "Exceptional Paper Quality," comment. That, added to its numerical grade, spectacular color and broad margins should create tremendous bidder interest in this note. Two others in this grade have recent auction records: another PMG 65 that realized over $25,000 in our January '07 sale, and yet another that realized $26,300 in January of '08. PMG has graded six Fr. 161's at this 65EPQ level. All have likely come from the same serial-number run as this note. That run has supplied generations of collectors with high-grade examples of this type, and save for that run, there would be virtually none. Of the 62 Fr. 161's known, only sixteen of them are not from this run, and none of those sixteen is high-grade.From The Thomas M. Flynn Collection
