Description

Brilliantly Colored PMG 55 1874 Legal Fifty

Fr. 152 $50 1874 Legal Tender PMG About Uncirculated 55. Forty-four examples of this number are known. PMG has graded twelve of those, with this being the third from the top. The eye appeal of the note is tremendous, with a bold red overprint as opposed to the normal indistinct light pink. All the floral decoration in both the capital "L"s is amazingly sharp, clean and clear. The note is beautifully margined on both sides and, as is typical for these "D" position notes, it has an overly large bottom margin. It's a new note to the census, bringing the total now known up to 45. Two higher-grade examples of this number have recently crossed the six-figure mark: a PCGS 64 realized $103,500 in October of 2005, and we sold a PMG 65 for $115,000 in September of last year. This note, while not technically as nice as either of those, is certainly in the same class for eye appeal. We would expect this Gem-appearing AU to realize right around...
