Description

Unique From This Location

Putnam, CT - $10 1882 Brown Back Fr. 485 The Thompson NB Ch. # 1477
An incredible new discovery from one of Connecticut's few truly rare banks. This institution, which was originally chartered in Thompson, issued First Charters and Brown Backs from that venue before moving to nearby Putnam, where it issued a mere 870 sheets of Brown Backs before liquidating in 1893. Only one note is known from the Thompson location (which we sold in January of 2004 for $27,600) and no notes whatever had been reported from the Putnam location before this specimen emerged from the marvelous C.A. Dolph & Son collection, where it had been laying undisturbed since the late 1940's. Fortunately for this generation of collectors, Mr. Dolph and his son had a great eye for quality in an era when few cared, with this note typical of just about all in their holdings, being a lightly circulated and utterly problem free piece with bright paper, great colors, and strong signatures. PMG Very Fine 25, a wonderful Connecticut trophy item worthy of the very finest of collections.
