Description

Serial Number 1 Lead, SD $5 Brown Back

Lead, SD - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 472 The First NB Ch. # 4631
A true South Dakota wonder note which is one of only six number 1 Brown Backs extant from all banks in the state combined. Three are Territorials, leaving only a trio of state issue number 1's, and two of that number are $10 examples, leaving this as the sole number 1 $5 state issue Brown Back in the census. This is its first appearance at public sale and, fortunately for collectors, it is a most attractive piece, with good pen signatures, strong color, and no defects save for a tiny corner nip well outside the margin that PMG saw no reason to even mention. If you are looking for one of the greatest of South Dakota's trophy notes, this PMG graded Very Fine 30 specimen is an item that must come home with you tonight.
